Renaldo Domino shares a brief memory with Michael during their week at the Met Theatre in 1969.
The Jacksons and I were basically from the same area. I'm from the South Side of Chicago and they were from Gary, Ind. Back then, the Jackson Five and I performed at several shows locally in Chicago on the South Side, at different night clubs on the Chitlin Circuit. This [particular memory] was around the time they were on Steeltown Records and were doing shows based on a song they released called 'Big Boy'.
Back when we were performing at the Met Theatre in April of 1969, Michael was 10 years old and I was 19. I remember this one instance during our time at the Met Theatre where I told people, 'I'm going around the corner to get some hot chocolate,' because it was April and still kind of chilly outside. Michael overheard me and said he wanted to go with me. (At that time, he didn't have any kind of strict security around him because the Jackson Five hadn't made it to Motown yet). So Michael tagged along with me to go get some hot chocolate, and I remember I had to fight off these little 12 and 13-year-old girls from messing with him! *Laughs*
It's hard to remember anything Michael and I specifically talked about because he was just a little kid at the time and I was nine years older than him. But, I remember him being wide-eyed and observing everything that was going on, which helped him become the entertainer that he was. That hot chocolate trip around the corner of the theatre was the one time I interacted with Michael on a one-on-one basis because we were so different in age. (I interacted more with his older brothers Jermaine, Tito and Jackie). But, I definitely love that memory. It's a small, but one I will never forget! *Laughs*
